Review – Kung Fu Hustle

kung-fu-hustleIt’s time for the ‘K’ film of the Alphabet challenge and the 2004 chinese action comedy film Kung Fu Hustle. Directed, produced, written by Stephen Chow who also stars in the film.

Set in Shanghai, the film tells the story of two friends and their attempts to join local gangsters – the ruthless ‘Axe Gang’. The two friends who attempt to impersonate gang members to begin with, are tasked by the gang to kill someone and the film follows their exploits beyond this.

The film is an odd combination of traditional Chinese action and violence (albeit the version I saw had little blood) combined with very quirky comedy. The lead characters are likeable enough but overall the result of the film is an odd output of action and slapstick comedy that didn’t quite work for me.

4/10
